The efficacy of herbs as biomaterials

剥落的痕迹 瘙痒的痛楚 无人可知 残缺的外观胜似不完美却独一无二

The patterns of skin falling, the pain of itchy is known to nobody. The scattered skin is imperfect yet sole.

Herbal medicine with healing effects and recyclable biomaterials are research aspect that she has searched into. She create bio-products such as gloves and packages derived from aromatic herbs - Pogostemon Cablin and Herba Eupatorii - aquafaba ( liquid from cooked beans ), etc.

According to the anti-fungal characteristic of herbal medicines and the herbal biomaterials she made, they are the effect of curing Tinea manuum, which is a dermatophyte infection of one or both hands.

她所研究的方向是兼具缓解功效的中草药与可回收的生物材料。她利用藿香、佩兰等芳香类中草药,以及豆类蒸煮后剩余的水(aquafaba)等材料,制作出了手套、包装等生物材料。

基于中草药的抗真菌特性以及她所制成的中草药生物材料,这些产品对于治疗手癣(一种感染一只手或双手的皮肤癣菌病)具有缓解效果。

The prescription of Tinea manuum can be combined with the application of Pogostemon Cablin, Herba Eupatoriican which have the effects of sedation by touching, healing effects of easing anxiety by smelling, mixed with warm water can have anti-bacteria effects.

By applying the properties of Chinese herbal medicine itself and through continuous experiments, she applied herbal medicine to transform it from flat to three-dimensional and made it into bio-materials, which can be degradable, recycled, and have healing effects, and can be applied to the skin surface.

The thin and smooth material can fit the skin well and make people feel comfortable. The material can be made into wearable accessories, such as glove that can be removed from fingers and palms, so that people can choose what to wear by the part of the skin.

她利用中草药本身的特性,并通过不断的实验,将中草药从平面形态转化为立体形态,制成了可降解、可回收、具有疗愈功效且能应用于皮肤表面的生物材料。

这种轻薄光滑的材料能够很好地贴合皮肤,带来舒适感。该材料可制成可穿戴配饰,例如可以将手指和手掌部分分开摘取的手套,让人们可以根据皮肤部位的不同自由选择佩戴方式。

Research about Tinea Manuum

‍关于手藓的调研

Based on the research, Tinea manuum, it can be caused by various fungi. It causes severe itching. The risk factor is highly contagious, The triggers come from superficial mycosis in skin diseases and can be spread by direct contact or by contact with contaminated material. Besides, the age of the patients and the distribution of pathogenic fungi are shown that the datas of dermatophyte are the largest proportion.

The paper shows that essential oil from the leaves of Pogostemon cablin through in vitro experiment which is found that Pogostemon cablin can be used for the treatment of the dermatophytes, the skin fungus disease. 

根据研究,手癣可由多种真菌引起,导致剧烈瘙痒。其风险因素在于传染性极强,诱因来源于皮肤病中的浅部真菌病,可通过直接接触或接触受污染的物品传播。此外,从患者年龄与病原菌分布情况来看,数据显示皮肤癣菌所占比例最大。

研究论文表明,通过体外实验发现,从广藿香叶片中提取的精油可用于治疗皮肤癣菌病,即皮肤真菌病。

Design

设计

From the investigation of the symptoms of Tinea Manuum, it can be seen that most of the symptoms will appear in interfinger, volar and palm. Based on this, I decided to design glove on hand.

根据手癣症状的调研可以看出,大多数症状会出现在指间、手掌和掌心部位。基于这一点,我决定设计佩戴在手上的手套。

I designed each part of the glove to be removable, so that people can choose the part to wear according to the range of conditions.
我将手套的每个部分设计成可拆卸的,这样人们就可以根据患处的范围来选择佩戴的部位。

In order to facilitate the degradation and recycling of materials to a greater extent, the packaging I designed is also made of the same materials.

为了更大程度地方便材料的降解与回收,我设计的包装也采用了相同的材料。

Experiment Development

‍实验发展

I did some experiments to find out the ideal softness. The thin and smooth material can fit the skin well and make people feel comfortable.

Then I decided the color – I tried to use fruit peels, such as onion peels, carrot peels and cucumber peels to dye the herbal medicine – however, Peel staining has an effect on the original fragrance of herbal medicines and the color of peels are difficult to extract.

Then I found that herbal medicine has a pure natural color by extracting the yellow part of the herb and the originally brown part.

我进行了一些实验以寻找理想的柔软度。这种轻薄光滑的材料能够很好地贴合皮肤,带来舒适感。

随后我确定了颜色——我尝试使用果皮,如洋葱皮、胡萝卜皮和黄瓜皮来为中草药染色。然而,果皮染色会影响中草药原本的香气,且果皮的颜色难以提取。

之后我发现,通过提取中草药中的黄色部分及其原本的棕色部分,最终选择了中草药纯天然的色彩。

Final

‍产出

The final product is the biomaterials made from herbal medicines. As a product concept that can be further implemented, the glove shows that each finger parts can be removed and installed at any time, which better enables users to wear corresponding gloves according to their own parts that has Tinea manuum infection.

The package materials are 100% made from bio-materials and ingredients from herbal medicines. And the handle part is designed to have enough length to open the package and take out the required objects as the users’ needs.

最终的成果是以中草药为原料制成的生物材料。作为一款可以进一步落地实现的产品概念,这款手套展示了其每个手指部分都可以随时拆卸和安装,从而让用户能够更好地根据自身手癣感染的部位佩戴相应的手套。包装材料100%由生物材料及中草药成分制成。提手部分的设计具备足够的长度,方便用户根据自身需要打开包装并取出所需物品。
